Small Appliances

If you don’t already have then gathering dust, they can often be found at the local thrift store.

Immersion Blender:

Imagine the convenience of pulling a thin, portable stick from a drawer instead of digging in the back of a cupboard each time you need to puree something — not to mention how much easier it is to clean, as there’s no extra jar to deal with. Plus, this small but mighty tool can blend almost anything, from silky soups to green smoothies. It usually comes with chopper and whisk attachments, reducing the need for other appliances and an unnecessary arm workout. The one thing it’s not good at is making large batches of icy cocktails, but personal-size ones are no problem.

Electric Hand Mixer:

Every baker—regardless of whether they bake daily or monthly—needs a good electric mixer in the cabinet (if they don't already have a stand mixer, that is). These are used for anything from whipping egg whites to baking homemade cookies. Now normally I don’t recommend a product but the Hamilton Beach 6-Speed model, is a great no-frills option that comes with a whisk and easy-clean beaters. It also includes a snap-on case that's great for storing everything neatly together.

Slow Cooker:

Slow Cooker:

As a result of the long, low-temperature cooking, slow cookers help tenderize less-expensive cuts of meat. A slow cooker brings out the flavor in foods. A wide variety of foods can be cooked in a slow cooker, including one pot meals, soups, stews and casseroles. Odds are this one is in the back of your cabinet gathering dust, USE IT!

Rice Cooker:

OK, I admit it, I can not cook rice. Sticky or hard under cooked, I do both, never have I ever been able to hit that sweet spot when it comes to rice. Rice cooker come with a perfectly measured cup and water lines on the inside. Fill it, push a button and 20 minutes later it’s done. Just follow the instructions and it’s perfect rice every time. Rice cookers can be used for much more than rice. They can cook other grains, including quinoa, farro, polenta, risotto, and more – even oatmeal!

Bread Machine:

A bread machine enables one to dump all the ingredients into the machine, press a button, and theoretically, walk away. Three and a half hours later, you can come back to bread that is baked and ready to eat. All the machines I have seen have the dough only feature, this is what I use. It kneads and proofs the dough, when it goes ‘Ding’ (about an hour) your dough is ready. I often use it for Pizza dough, the dough recipe I have at the site seems to work the best with machines.

Air Fryer:

Air Fryer:

Still haven't hopped on the air fryer bandwagon yet? If you've been putting off this investment for a while, this is your sign to take the leap. There are plenty on the market that are reasonably priced, also I see at least 2 a month in local thrift stores.

Electric Grill:

It’s hard to control the temperature on grills and grill pans, but this game changer makes it easy and usually maxes out at around 450°F — that means fewer smoke alarms. It can be used for every type of protein and all types of breakfast foods, or even for toasting bread if you’ve had enough of your toaster. A favorite surprising use is for grilling vegetables like green beans and mini bell peppers. Who says they have to be season-specific? Also, don’t buy that panini grill, the only difference between that and all the other grills is the spacing of the grill lines.
